Course Work Overview:

Lesson One —

Building Wants, Desires, and Stakes

Every unforgettable speculative story begins with a character who needs something.

In this lesson, writers uncover the emotional engine that drives their protagonist forward.

 You’ll learn how to articulate:

  • The character’s core desire
  • The deeper emotional want beneath it
  • The personal and world‑level stakes that make the story matter

Writers leave with a protagonist whose motivations are powerful enough to sustain an entire narrative arc.

Lesson Two —

Building Personality Traits From Scratch

This lesson goes beyond demographics to build characters.

It teaches writers how to construct personality traits rooted in childhood that transform their psychology, behavior, and worldview as adults.

Writers explore:

  • How traits emerge from internal pressures and lived experience
  • How to design consistent, believable behavior patterns
  • How personality shapes choices, conflict, and relationships

By the end, their characters feel dimensional, specific, and alive on the page.

Lesson Three —

Understanding Backstory, Origin Story, and Misbeliefs

A character’s past is the soil from which their entire arc grows. This lesson guides writers through the deeper architecture of backstory — not as exposition, but as the emotional blueprint of the story.

Writers will map:

  • The origin story that shaped the character’s worldview
  • The misbelief that drives their internal conflict
  • The emotional wounds and formative moments that influence their choices

This is where characters gain depth, vulnerability, and narrative inevitability.

Lesson Four —

Writing Starting and Ending Points

A powerful character arc requires a clear beginning and a meaningful transformation.

In this final lesson, writers define:

  • Who the character is at the start of the story
  • How they transform by the end
  • How the arc aligns with the story’s themes, worldbuilding, and speculative premise

Writers finish with a strong opening point, a resonant ending point, and a roadmap for the emotional journey in between.
